Liberation BC's Film Screening Series has two films coming up

Lolita, Slave to Entertainment is a documentary that follows the life of a 37 year old performing killer whale at the Miami Seaquarium. It raises the question of our relationship to animals in entertainment.

Earthlings documents humankind's economic dependence on animals raised for food, clothing, entertainment, scientific research, and as pets.

This double feature screening is free and will be held at the Vancouver Public Library's downtown branch in the Alma VanDusen Room on the lower level (doors open at 12:30 pm)

If you would like more information, you can contact Liberation BC.

Karma Rescue

A big thank you to everyone who donated money to Karma's surgery.

With all of your contributions, we were able to raise $2104.00!!!

Karma is now at the Hope Farm Delta, under the wonderful care of Janet Friesen who volunteers her time and resources to save horses in need.

We delivered the cheque to pay for the surgery on Saturday and the operation to remove his hernia has been scheduled!

He is adapting well to his new home under Janet's care, thanks to her patience and love for horses.

Again, thank you all so very much for giving Karma a second chance!

Karma Rescue!

Please help us raise the urgent amount of $2,000 to help pay for his surgery!

We were touched by the story of this little colt who is only 6 months old, but faced being "disposed" of due to a severe hernia that he suffers from. The current care takers are not able to afford the surgery.

Fortunately, Hope Farm in Delta has agreed to adopt him, provided that Karmavore can raise the funds required for his surgery. We will be saving him from a terrible fate of either being put up for disposal auction or possibly even rendered into fertilizer.

In honor of our campaign, the colt will be named "Karma".

His hernia (which you can see in the 2nd picture) is a sac that formed because his abdominal wall muscles did not close. A bit of bowel sticks into it. If this twists and cannot be pushed back in it will get gangrene and he will die in pain. If we do not pay for the surgery then his owners will "dispose" of him... and he will die. He is otherwise a healthy little fellow and should just be able to run and play with the other horses. He will never go to the track and he will find a forever home if we can get together and give him a chance.

Karmavore has agreed to raise the funds required for the surgery. We know that we can count on all of our wonderful supporters and save Karma!

Karmavore will be accepting donations in-store and online, as well as putting 20% of all sales until the end of September towards the cause.

Please consider making a generous donation and/or shopping at Karmavore this month!

Special thanks to Janet at Hope Farm for making this possible!

How to help:

Make a donation during your next visit to Karmavore or donate online by visiting our donations page.

Walk for Farm Animals

Every September and October Farm Sanctuary (a non-profit that works to end cruelty towards farm animals, and promotes compassionate living) holds a Walk for Farm Animals organized by volunteers in communities across the U.S. and Canada. The walk is intended to raise awareness of the plight of industrial farmed animals while raising funds for the sanctuary.

This year
Karmavore is one of the walk's sponsors. If you would like to make a pledge, you can visit our donation page. And if you make a pledge of $25 or more, you will receive a coupon code (valid until October 31st) to use at our online or retail shop.

Want to join a walk in your community?
In Canada there are walks organized in Vancouver, Calgary, St. Catherines, Toronto, Kingston, and Halifax. You can register for one of these walks by visiting Farm Sanctuary's Walk for Animals 2010 locations page or find a walk nearest you. If there isn't one already organized in your community, you can start your own walk and register it with Farm Sanctuary.

Also, when you register for the walk three weeks prior to the event, you will receive a "compassion for all" t-shirt. This year's t-shirt is designed by
Vaute Couture. You can see the t-shirt image here.

Thanks for your support!

For the animals!

Thank you to Farm Sanctuary for the use of the Support the Walk image.

VHS Action Alert

From the Vancouver Humane Society's Action Alert notice:

Please join us for an Animal Rights Community Dialogue focused on
using fun and entertainment for outreach.

Do you want to see fun and exciting outreach events happen in Vancouver? Do you have ideas for music, theater, poetry, or art performances that promote compassion for animals?

Join other like-minded activists and passionate animal-lovers in creating and planning outreach events that go beyond the ordinary.

Join the discussion whether you have ideas, skills, or talents you would like put to use, or just want to help. Everyone is welcome. This is the second of this series of animal rights community dialogues hosted by Liberation BC. The first event produced many ideas for ways we can work together to achieve our goals. At the conclusion of that event we determined the topics for the next 4 events. The 3 events happening later this year will be:

1. Developing a local information hub: who, what, why, and how?
2. Educating ourselves: becoming better activists through education and practice
3. What is our message?

These all promise to be exciting and fruitful discussions. These are not specifically Liberation BC events or projects. The idea of these community dialogues is to bring the community together to create together – beyond any single group or coalition. We hope that these events serve to create a stronger, more vibrant, and more effective animal rights community in Vancouver.

Radha will be providing their beautiful space for this event, so join us, grab a cup of chai, and let's get the conversation going.

Admission is $5 and there are 50 spaces available. Please register now at http://apowerfulvoice.eventbrite.com.

No one will be turned away due to lack of funds, though, so if you are unable to afford the admission, please just email Glenn (glenn@liberationbc.org) and he will take care of it. Also, if you have no credit card (or hate Paypal) and would like to pay at the event, please also get in touch with Glenn.

NOTE: This event is happening when Radha is closed. There will be drinks and some cookies available, but no "real" food.

If you're taking off for the weekend, don't forget that sweet & sara marshmallows roast nicely over a campfire. Or if you'd rather just make a snack for the road, one container will make one recipe of crispy rice squares.
If you prefer the air puffed marshmallow, Dandies are back in stock as well!

If we do get some sunny & warm weather in Vancouver this weekend, we now carry Coconut Bliss bars that are a rich, creamy and refreshing treat. Made with organic fair trade ingredients, we have the natural coconut flavour and dark chocolate flavour in stock.

As always, we are adding new goodies to our shop all the time. Browse through the karmavore website. Click on the "what's new" option to see what has recently arrived.

Vegan Brunch

When I was given Isa Chandra-Moskowitz's Vegan Brunch as a gift, I never thought I'd use it. I thought, "how often do I really eat brunch?" Well, once a week as it turns out, especially since I delved into this book and started having fun trying out new recipes. I wanted to share some of the results I've had.

I opened the book looking for new ideas for my scrambled tofu. Not only did I find new ideas, but I ended up making omelettes instead!

I made Tofu Omelettes stuffed with sauteed mushrooms and collard greens. Moskowitz offers many other combinations for filling your omelettes as well. I also added a little daiya cheese to mine towards the end of the cooking, and voila beautiful omelettes. They were quick and easy to make, and the results were delicious.

Like some of her other books, Isa Chandra-Moskowitz walks you through each recipe, giving tips along the way. If a recipe looks like too many steps, she directs you to what you can make the night before.

When I made the Lemon-Cashew stuffed Crepes with the Berry Sauce, I prepared the crepe batter the night before, and soaked the cashews. In the morning I could let the berry sauce cook while I prepared the crepes.

Making crepes was a new experience for me, but I felt less intimidated using this book as my guide, and I was pretty happy with the results.

The Tofu Benny was probably my favourite to make so far because it looked and tasted so impressive, and was really easy to make. I marinated the tofu overnight as suggested, and then cooked it the next morning while I made the faux-hollandaise sauce. I opted to serve the Tofu Benny atop the Diner Home Fries as opposed to the English Muffin simply because I had potatoes on hand, and no English muffins (if I wanted to make my own English muffins she also has a recipe for these as well!) This is by far my favourite recipe so far. The hollandaise sauce is the best! It is so flavourful and rich.

Other recipes I'd recommend from this book are the Bakery Style Berry Muffins, the Brazilian French Toast, and the Swiss Chard Frittata.

There is a wide range of recipes, and if you enjoy brunch or have wanted to enjoy brunch, this is definitely a fun book to have on hand to try something new, or try a new spin on something you've made before.
