Karma + Erica

Most of you will remember Karma, the handsome colt rescued through Hope Farm Delta and Karmvavore fundraising efforts.

Karma is doing very well since his life saving surgery and has grown into a handsome, fast, and healthy horse!

He has also found his new forever home where he will be placed in January, with Erica, where he will be loved and taken care of.

Janet Friesen of Hope Farm Delta, who has been the single most important person of this effort, has taken care of and raised Karma, including all transport and veterinary arrangements, and finding him his suitable forever home. Here is an update from Janet:

Karma is an amazingly confident, brave and
intelligent fellow. He is getting quite muscular and of course, beautiful. He loves to play and run very fast. He tests my 24 year old gelding's patience, but nothing is more patient than a horse. A lot of the time he is just quiet and taking in all the information. He is still happy to hang around people even when the herd is far away. He really connects with Erica and her parents. Her father says he has seen a thousand colts but none with Karma's brain. He acts like he is a much older horse, except for teething on his lead rope. He has a wonderful, calm mind and spirit and the name Karma befits his noble being. He has an old soul. I think he is on a wonderful path and will be happy at his new home. Thank-you to everyone who helped him, especially Salim and Jenn. You are generous beyond imagination.

Thank you Janet for everything you have done for Karma! You have not only saved his life but also given him a warm and loving upbringing, and ensured his happiness in a good home.

For those that wish to help make a contribution to Hope Farm Delta, you may contact Janet at hopefarm@eastlink.ca

Janet also wishes to mention the following Horse Rescue organizations that could also use your help!

Bake Sale Success!

You baked, you came, and you donated!

Thanks to all of you and your generosity, we were able to raise $1447.00 for the Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association (VOKRA)! You donated most generously (I think we could have added another table!) to take home some treats from the bake tables, and you also donated whenever you purchased a Sweets from the Earth baked good from our deli, or a karmavore raffle ticket at the cash. All of this added up to help the kitties!

We were overwhelmed with everyone's generosity whether you baked for the sale or donated when you arrived.

We'd like to thank all of those bakers out there who came in numbers for this event. Wow! What an amazing turnout!

A special thanks to Sprout Vegan Bakery for bringing the delicious mini cheesecakes and for donating your time to help out at the bake sale table.

Thank you to Artisan Bake Shoppe for donating the delicious Chocolate Cake, and the Vegan Banana Pecan Cookies (that we've since decided to carry in the store as well!)

We'd also like to thank all of those that provided us with some great raffle prizes:
Bikram's Yoga New Westminster
Four Fauna
Carla Kelly
Live for Tomorrow
Pedagogy Toys
and Saeco BC

Thank you to Janna Hurtzig of Astrosatchel for having a trunk sale with us on the upper level during the bake sale. Janna brought a fabulous selection of her totes, wallets, and even silk-screened pillows for people to choose from.

What was your favorite cookie, cupcake, or other treat from the bake sale?

Vegan Organic Local Wines in Vancouver, BC

One often difficult search for vegans is finding cruelty free wine.

What's wrong with wine you say?

Well, wine is clarified, or cleared, after fermentation, and for some unnecessary and barbaric
voodoo like reason, a bizarre assortment of animal components are most often used, such as:

- edible gelatins (made from bones)
- isinglass (made from the swim bladders of fish)
- casein and potassium caseinate (milk proteins)
- animal albumin (egg albumin and dried blood powder)

Yuckety yuck yuck yuckerson!

Fortunately in BC, we have two absolutely wonderful local wine companies to choose from! (we have contacted and verified with both of these suppliers that all of the wines they produce are 100% vegan)

Lotusland Vineyards (website: lotuslandvineyards.com)

Nestled in the Fraser Valley surrounded by snow topped mountains and just 27 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, Lotusland's three and one half hectare vineyard offers not only spectacular views, but also the
perfect coastal climate for growing some of the world's finest wine grapes.

Deep Creek Wine Estate (Hainle) (website: hainle.com)

Deep Creek Wine Estate & Hainle Vineyards Estate Winery are located in the sunny Okanagan wine region of British Columbia, Canada. The winery has a strong commitment to natural chemical free viticulture and handcrafted winemaking. Our own vineyards are managed naturally chemical free. All of our growing and cellar practices are traditional according to the Huber family wine purity law of 1856. The Huber family wine purity laws which exceed Canadian and International certified Organic winemaking standards have been followed in every aspect of winegrowing and winemaking since the Huber family bought Hainle Vineyards Estate Winery in 2002. We are dedicated to producing the highest possible quality, naturally dry, fully fermented wines.

Where to Buy
Your best bet is to visit the websites for each above wineries as their supplies will change often.

But as of today, here are some centrally located suppliers in Metro Vancouver:

Liquor Depot
4125 Hastings Street
Burnaby, BC
(604) 298-4624

Brewery Creek Liquor Store
3045 Main Street
Vancouver, BC
(604) 872-3373

A Vegan Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and your partner has:

a) Just decided 2011 would be the year they become vegan.

b) Watched Food Inc. and is now being mindful of what he/she eats.

c) Been Vegan for ages and doesn’t hold out much hope for being impressed on February 14th.

Worried? Don’t be! We’ve got a great guide for you that will knock your loved one’s socks off (or underwear. It depends what your intentions are.)

First of all start a new trend this year and have a Vegan Night In.

Present your loved one with a box of succulent Sjaaks Nuts and Chews Valentine's Box to show your partner that you care.

Before you bring out the main course, wet your appetite with a delicious appetizer.

Field Roast’s Chao Cheese, a tangy, artisan cheese formed by hand and rolled with fine herbs and sweet red peppers, is perfect on bread or crackers. It goes great with Mary’s Gone Crackers crackers! An easy first course which is sure to please.

When it comes to feeding vegans for dinner, Karmavore’s grocery can definitely provide you with something to satisfy. Serve one of our Herbed Cutlets with a side of veggies and salad. Or if you want to really impress, break out the Hazelnut Roast En Croute for that special WOW factor.

You’ve given her/him chocolates, appetizers and a full meal, now the real fun begins (that is if you aren’t too full from your delicious vegan meal and have fallen asleep on the couch).

For a sexy night of lovin’, grab our Galiano Island Soap Works Valentine’s bag.

Full of sensual goodies such as floating soy candles, lavender tub tea, mango body butter, and a massage candle, it’s bound to make your evening a memorable one.

Or you may just want a few candles to add some candlelight, and for that we have many more soy candles from Galiano of different scents and sizes.

Did you know you could order most of these items online? That’s right, you don’t even have to leave the house in order to truly dazzle your Vegan Mate.

Wishing you an amazing and romantic cruelty free Valentines Day!

The BC Poodle and Small Dog Rescue

One of the animal rescue groups that the money from this fundraiser will go to is the BC Poodle and Small Dog Rescue. This group is based in Victoria, B.C. not only rescues dogs locally, but they also work with rescue groups in Los Angeles that save dogs from the shelters that have a high kill rate. The group then cares for and finds foster homes until they can adopt out the dogs to their forever homes.

Funds raised for this group will go mainly towards vet bills and travel expenses.

One story that illustrates the help we can provide by raising money for this rescue group is the story of Gertie. Gertie is 9 year old, 5lb toy poodle who is a local rescue. Her teeth were in such bad shape that her gums bled constantly, and she had great difficulty eating. She desperately needed vet care and dental surgery.

If the BC Poodle and Small Dog Rescue hadn't taken Gertie in and to the vet for dental work, she would have quite probably died from her ailment. Fortunately for Gertie, her two sessions of dental surgery were successful and she did not lose all of her teeth as originally thought. She is now up for adoption at the rescue.

If you are planning on attending the fundraising event at Karmavore and haven't already heard, the event has been changed to Sunday, January 23d.

For more information read our previous post and find the link to purchase tickets there.

We are also accepting in store donations. Just ask one of the staff about how you can donate to the BC Poodle and Small Dog Rescue.
